FAQs

Why do you use western red cedar for your gates?

So many reasons! Western red cedar is beautiful in its color variation, durable, rot-resistant, and sustainable. Not to mention, our shop is located right in the heart of western red cedar country.

Can you create variations of your gates?

Absolutely. If you like the elements of two (or more) of our gates and would like to combine them, we’re happy to work with you on it. We’re also open to looking at drawings or incorporating an original idea you have into a custom order. Note that custom orders may take longer to process and will vary in price.

Will my gate be stained?

We don’t stain our gates. It’s not that we’re against staining; we’d just rather concentrate on the art of crafting. The cedar we use in our gates is kiln-dried with tight growth rings, which alone makes for a very stable, enduring product. Stains will give you pigment, but they won’t improve the gate beyond that. Left alone to the elements, western red cedar acquires a lovely grey patina.

How long will my order take to process and ship?

Fulfillment is somewhat variable depending on the current volume of orders. Minimum “lead time” (time between ordering and shipping) is 4-5 weeks. We will let you know if your gate will take longer than that.

.How much do you charge for shipping?

We offer free ground freight shipping throughout the U.S. We do not ship internationally. If you reside within a reasonable distance of Bellingham, WA, we can hand deliver, as well. You may also arrange to pick up from our shop in Bellingham.

What is your return policy?

Due to the nature of our product, we cannot accept returns. Please let us know within 3 days of receipt if there is a problem with your order, and we will do our best to rectify it.

Do your gates come with hardware and hinges?

They do not. Gate hardware is a pretty personal thing; not everyone wants the same style, color, etc. We have, however, included a few links below to online sources we can recommend for gate hardware. There is quite a range of styles and prices to fit most any taste and budget. (Note: We recommend ball bearing hinges rather than pin hinges when hanging our gates.)
